The ongoing photo series Newfangled/Erneuerungssüchtig explores the intersection of gender identity, consumer behavior, and media-shaped ideals of beauty. At its core is a personal engagement with garments purchased but not worn in public due to shame and fear of judgment. These feminized pieces, often associated with promises of status and gender euphoria, remain either in dust bags or are worn only in private spaces. Through staged self-portraits, photography is used as a tool for desensitization in the safety of a domestic environment. The act of photographing becomes a form of rehearsal, an embodied process through which boundaries are tested in preparation for possible increased visibility.
The series serves as a means to confront internalized shame and explore new forms of self-empowerment. Clothing here is not merely an object of fashion, but a medium through which personal desires, social expectations, and aesthetic self-representation are negotiated. Step by step, Newfangled challenges the comfort zone and redefines what feels wearable in public, moving between interior and exterior, between longing and lived reality.
But the series did not remain confined to the domestic. In the second phase, the work steps into transitional spaces like forests, empty roads, deserted places. Nature became a liminal site, a space where visibility is still negotiable and the thin veil between self and society slowly blurs.
Eventually, the project entered its most public chapter: the city. With increasing confidence, exposed femininity was brought into urban environments. What began as intimate fantasy evolved into political presence. Clothing, once a source of anxiety and longing, became armor, declaration, and a tool for transformation.
Every photograph is conceived and executed by the Artist alone. This process is an intentional choice, emphasizing the isolation and vulnerability woven into the work. The resulting images reflect a deep solitude that often mirrors the fear of societal rejection. This approach resonates with the experiences of many who have navigated the complexities of gender identity in silence. Historically, those compelled to conceal their true selves have often turned to private rituals: trying on cherished garments in secret, capturing self-portraits, or seeking connection through anonymous online spaces. These solitary acts of self-expression, though hidden, stand as declarations of identity and longing.
